These rules apply to everything published on vyaz.net — charts, photographs, posts, comments, reviews, listings, profiles and private messages. They form part of the Terms of Use, and they are written to be pointed at: a moderator explaining a decision names the rule it rests on, and every rule below is meant to be recognisable in a concrete case rather than agreed with in principle.

1. Criticism of work, not of the person

Work may be discussed plainly. "The stitches lie unevenly" and "the palette looks muddy" are an ordinary conversation about needlework and are not a breach of anything. Remarks about the person behind the work are: the test is whether the sentence still carries an insult once the work is taken out of it.

2. Unsolicited advice

Where an author has said that they are showing progress and are not asking for advice, advice is not given. Where they have not said it, criticism of the work is in place.

3. Other people's charts

Do not publish charts you hold no rights in: redrawn from a purchased kit, photographed out of a magazine, or downloaded from another site. A manufacturer's chart may be published only as an attachment to the kit it belongs to, naming the manufacturer, and never as your own work.

Forking a chart from the catalogue is permitted and provided for. The link to the original is recorded automatically and cannot be removed.

A chart that is in the catalogue cannot be deleted by its author: other people hold its address and other people's projects run from it. Ask from the chart's own page, and a person will answer. Taking a chart out of the catalogue remains yours to do at any time.

4. Brand names, threads and conversion tables

DMC, Anchor, Madeira, Cosmo, Gamma, PNK im. Kirova, Riolis and other brand names are the trade marks of their owners. We are not affiliated with those companies, do not represent them, and have not been endorsed by them. The names are used to say which thread is meant: nominative use, without which needlework cannot be discussed at all.

We do not copy anybody's conversion tables. Matches between the threads of different brands on this site are computed here — from published colour coordinates converted into CIELAB, with the ΔE2000 metric. They are our own computed data and not a reproduction of somebody's colour card. Every colour in the database carries the origin of its value.

We do not use brand logos, brand typefaces or brand symbol sets. The symbols on charts come from Unicode and from freely licensed fonts.

A substitution is an estimate and not a guarantee. Dye reflects light differently from a screen that emits it, and dye lots differ from one another. The thread number is the fact; the colour on the screen is an indication. Check against a physical colour card before a large piece of work.

The same limits apply to what members publish here. Naming the brand of a thread, a kit or a designer is a statement of fact and is expected. Uploading a brand's logo, reproducing a brand's colour card or conversion table, publishing a designer's chart, or presenting your listing or your profile as though it belonged to a brand or were authorised by one, are not.

If you hold rights in something and believe we are handling it wrongly, write to [email protected], or use the rights claim form where a published item is concerned.

5. Reviews

A review is written about a kit or a chart you have had. A review written for payment or for any other consideration must say so in its text. Reviews of your own work, and ratings solicited from people you know, are not permitted. A review that is not about the goods — the seller's speed of reply, for instance — is removed.

6. Dealings between members

We are not a party to what members agree between themselves and we hold none of their money. An arrangement made outside the Service is made at your own risk. Deceiving another member is grounds for a restriction on the account; it is not grounds for compensation from us.

7. Private messages

A first message to somebody who does not know you is not an advertisement and not a mailing. Identical messages sent in quantity are a breach whatever they say. If you are asked to stop writing, stop.

Private messages are not end-to-end encrypted. Where a complaint or a dispute requires it, authorised staff may read the messages relevant to that case, and every such reading is recorded.

8. Other people's personal data

Do not publish another person's address, telephone number, correspondence or photographs without their agreement. A screenshot of a private conversation posted in a public discussion is a breach irrespective of who was right in the conversation. Where a conflict has to be examined, a moderator reads the correspondence — publishing it yourself is not how that is done.

9. Repetition, promotion and second accounts

Repeated publications, a link in every comment, traded likes, referral farming, and second accounts used to support yourself in an argument or to evade a restriction are spam regardless of intent. One person holds one account.

10. Subject matter

This site is about needlework. Politics, religion, health and fundraising are not published here. That is not a judgement about their importance; it is the condition on which this stays a place people come to rest.

11. Disputes

Where a conflict has stopped moving, write to support rather than continuing it in public. Continuing a dispute in public after a moderator has intervened is a separate breach.

12. How these rules are applied

Decisions are taken by people. Two automated mechanisms operate alongside them, and neither of them reads content for meaning. A list of forbidden words refuses a submission that contains one, and names the word, so that the refusal can be acted on. Reports from other members are weighed — a report counts for more the longer the reporting account has been trusted — and a publication is hidden when the weight passes a threshold. Nothing published here is submitted to an artificial-intelligence service to be assessed or classified.

The only automatic measure that touches an account is a time-limited pause on publishing for a newly registered account, applied when several different people report it for spam. It is never permanent, it is never a ban, and a person reviews it. Every other measure — a warning, a pause on publishing, a suspension, the removal of material — is taken by a moderator, requires a written reason, and is recorded.

Hiding is not a decision; it is what happens before one. A hidden chart stays visible to its author, with the reason, and can still be edited. Nobody else sees it while a moderator has not looked.

You are told. Where content or an account is restricted, we write to the account's address: what was restricted, on what basis, for how long, and whether the decision was taken by automated means. The single exception is deceptive commercial content published in quantity.

You may contest it. Reply to the address given in that notice. A moderator who did not take the decision reviews it. Repeating the same request does not produce a further review.

Reporting is not open to a brand-new account and is not available while an account's own publishing is paused. We do not tell the subject of a report who reported them.

13. The measures themselves

In ascending order: a publication is hidden → a warning → publishing and sharing are paused for a period, while reading, your own charts and your own projects continue → the account is suspended and cannot sign in, its data staying where it is → material is removed. Which measure is applied is a moderator's judgement, and repetition weighs on it. Each is reversible except the removal of material, and each carries a reason.

Where something is removed from a conversation, a marker is left in its place: a discussion with a hole in it leaves the person who answered talking to nobody.

14. Claims of infringement

If you hold rights in a work published here, use the rights claim form. A substantiated claim holds the publication: it stops being publicly available while the matter is examined, and nothing is deleted — neither the chart nor the progress of anybody stitching from it. The author is told what was held and on what basis, and has fourteen days to answer. A person decides at the end.

15. What we do not do

We do not arbitrate matters of taste and we do not rate the quality of anybody's work. We do not restore material that has been removed. We do not disclose who reported whom.

16. Changes

These rules are published as numbered editions with the date shown at the top of this page. The edition in force when something happened is the one a decision about it is explained by.
